And with Adelaide Youth Theatre celebrating the 20th anniversary of High School Musical, there’s no better time to head back to East High, where basketballers, brainiacs and drama-club divas collide in a feel-good celebration of friendship, first love and finding the courage to be yourself. Based on the much-loved Nickelodeon series, this underwater adventure sees Bikini Bottom facing an impending catastrophe, with its inhabitants forced to put their differences aside and discover the power of community. There are few things more satisfying than watching a story you think you know completely turn around, throw off its corset, put on a pair of dancing shoes and announce, actually, I think I’ll write my own ending. That is precisely the delicious premise of & Juliet, the exuberant jukebox musical that asks the question Shakespeare probably never anticipated; what if Juliet simply decided that Romeo wasn’t worth dying for? Presented by the third-year graduating class and second-year students of Elder Conservatorium Music Theatre, this production is big, brash, gloriously pop-fuelled and, most importantly, enormous fun. Directed by Matt Hyde, who brings an intimate understanding of the show having worked on its original London production, this & Juliet feels completely at home in the hands of these emerging performers. There are plays that belong to their time, and then there are plays that will always keep finding us. Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman is firmly in the latter category, and in Neil Armfield’s extraordinary production, now making its final stop in Adelaide, Willy Loman’s American Dream feels less like history and more like a warning. Directed by Armfield with his trademark precision and restraint, this is a staging that trusts Miller’s words and, more importantly, trusts its actors to make those words hurt. Dale Ferguson’s striking set, evoking the bleachers of Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field, immediately places Willy’s obsession with sporting glory, success and being ‘well liked’ at the centre of the action. It is both stadium and memory, a place where dreams are celebrated, watched and ultimately dismantled. The decision to keep the ensemble visible in the bleachers gives the production an almost Greek-chorus quality, as though Willy’s past, present and imagined future are all watching him unravel. Menopause The Musical has been around long enough to know there are some things women simply don’t have time to put up with anymore; uncomfortable underwear, unsolicited advice, a dodgy thermostat, and pretending that menopause is something we should whisper about. More than two decades after creator and writer Jeanie Linders first turned the subject into a musical comedy phenomenon, this new Australian production is back on tour, and if the Adelaide audience is anything to go by, the sisterhood is still very much ready to laugh about it. Who gets to tell the story? And, perhaps more importantly, who gets to control it? That question sits at the heart of Ash Flanders’ Commentary, the latest production from State Theatre Company South Australia, a darkly comic, cleverly constructed work that becomes increasingly uncomfortable as its layers are peeled back. At its centre is Nick (Gyton Grantley), a once-promising filmmaker turned university lecturer whose controversial debut film Low is being resurrected for a retrospective screening. Made with his former best friend Hamish, the film has long been surrounded by allegations of abuse and exploitation. Pulteney Grammar School’s production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is exactly why school musical theatre matters. Joyful, polished, wildly entertaining and bursting with heart, this production proves what can happen when a school community truly invests in the arts, and in its young people. From the moment the show began, it was obvious that these students absolutely adore being on stage, and that passion spilled into every corner of the theatre. Under the expert direction of Jo Casson, the show moved with confidence and clarity, balancing the satirical humour of this classic musical with genuine warmth and energy. ‘Xanadu is glitter-soaked, joy filled chaos – and it absolutely works!’ ‘A roller skating burst of pure theatrical dopamine’ In the hands of the third-year ECMT students, this knowingly ridiculous, joy-soaked musical Xanadu becomes something even more satisfying; a celebration of commitment. Because Xanadu only works if everyone involved leans all the way in, and here, they absolutely do. It’s also worth acknowledging the sheer technical feat on display; this cast had to sing, act, dance and roller skate simultaneously, and they do so with impressive expertise, confidence, and very little visible fear. Based on the cult 1980 film, the story follows struggling artist Sonny Malone, whose mural dreams are interrupted by the sudden appearance of Kira, who is, of course, not just a muse, but Clio, a Greek goddess sent to inspire him.
