Review: Heathers The Musical at the Arts Theatre

Long before Mean Girls, Heathers set the bar high with its iconic 80s high school drama featuring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.  Now, Heathers: The Musical has made its Pelican Productions debut, directed by the fearless Georgia Broomhall, known for her exceptional work in youth musical theatre.

This musical pulls no punches, delivering a mix of edgy rock-pop tunes about everything from blue balls to slurpee brain freeze. It’s unapologetically outrageous, with Broomhall’s daring direction amplifying every risqué joke and cheeky dance move.

While the show revels in its provocative nature, it also surprises with its depth, particularly in the second act. What initially seems like a flashy, superficial spectacle unravels into a profound exploration of teen angst, peer pressure, bullying, and suicide. Broomhall skillfully navigates the balance between humour and serious themes, ensuring the production remains impactful without becoming overly grim.

The adaptation, crafted by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, successfully translates Daniel Water’s original film’s essence to the stage.

For those unfamiliar or needing a refresher, the story is set at Westerberg High in Ohio and follows 17-year-old Veronica Sawyer. She trades in her old self for a spot in the popular clique known as ‘The Heathers,’ only to have her life spiral out of control when she encounters the mysterious J.D., leading to chaos and dark twists.

The cast [Class 2 of 2024] delivers exceptional performances, firstly with the exceptional ensemble.

Every performer had their role and played it to a tee!

Taylor Schwartz standing out as Heather Chandler, embodying the role of the high school queen bee with impressive flair. Abi Sharp shines as Heather McNamara, particularly in the song ‘Lifeboat,’ while Juliette Keir endears as Martha. Daisy Jury adds comic relief as the eccentric teacher Ms. Fleming.

Emma Pool makes a strong impression as Heather Duke, especially when she takes on the red scrunchie. Alek Kudra’s portrayal of J.D. grows more compelling over the course of the show, revealing a depth that contrasts with his initial brooding demeanour.

Lluka Wadey, however, is the clear star of the evening, capturing Veronica Sawyer’s mix of teenage frustration, desire, and sharp wit combined with a powerful vocal performance.

The production pays vibrant tribute to the 80s with Shenayde Patterson’s dynamic choreography, Kylie Green and Broomhall’s spot-on costumes, Jason Dew’s inventive set design, featuring incredible animations by Ray Cullen.

The musical numbers, orchestrated under the direction of musical genius Ben Francis, create a full and immersive experience.

Heathers: The Musical delivers a thrilling, fun-filled theatre experience with surprising emotional depth, making for a night that’s both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Another brilliant production by one of Adelaide’s leading youth theatre companies!
